If you keep horses, the fastest way to plan a stable or a covered arena is to design it in our 3D shed designer, or send us your brief and request a written quote, and we will price it around your horses, your property and your site conditions. Every Tassie Sheds equestrian building is engineered to order from 100% Australian BlueScope steel, is ShedSafe accredited, and is designed for the specific wind, snow and solar loading at your property. We build on the same portal-frame system as our farm sheds and barns, which is what lets us tailor the height, span and width to what you actually need. What will a stable or arena cost, and how do you get a number?

Equestrian buildings vary too much to carry a fixed price. A good value shed is not always about price. A three-bay stable block, a shelter shed and a full covered arena are very different builds once you account for span, wall cladding, internal fit-out and whether you take it as a kit or have it installed. Rather than a vague "from" figure, design the exact building in the 3D designer and send it to us to price, or request a written quote so our team can factor in access and ground conditions. A stable build usually starts from one of our sheds or barns, and we adapt it to house horses, floats and gear. Height, span and width are all tailored to your needs, so you get a layout that fits your property rather than a fixed kit. From there you can:

• Add stable boxes and internal dividing walls to separate areas.
• Combine open and enclosed bays, so animals have easy access while equipment stays secure.
• Fit split doors, tack rooms and extended areas so horses can stretch out.

We supply the robust shell, and we can recommend local suppliers for the internal fit-out and trades to get you through the build.

Covered arenas sized to your property

A covered arena gives horses and riders year-round protection from Tasmania's rain, wind and summer sun. The most common size of a horse arena is around 24 m wide and 60 m long. Because the portal-frame system is flexible, we size the arena to the space you have rather than to a catalogue. You can:

• Choose an open roof-only cover, or clad one, two or three walls where you need a windbreak.
• Add extended header sheeting for extra protection over the ends.
• Extend the covered area with lean-tos on one or both sides.

The same portal-frame engineering we use for large rural buildings applies here, with clear spans up to 25 metres and heights up to 8 metres, so there is room to ride under cover.

Colours, cladding and extras

Stables and arenas are clad in your choice of COLORBOND® steel or ZINCALUME®, with dimensions tailored to your site and a range of value-adding extras. That gives you 22 standard COLORBOND® colours to tie the building in with your home, your fences and your existing sheds. For coastal properties, we can recommend COLORBOND® Ultra steel for extra corrosion resistance in salt exposure.

Engineered for Tasmanian conditions

Equestrian buildings often sit on open, exposed rural land, which is exactly where engineering earns its keep. Most of Tasmania sits in wind Region A (non-cyclonic), but an exposed paddock, an elevated block or a coastal property can attract much higher design wind speeds, and elevated areas such as the Central Highlands carry real snow loading. We engineer every stable and arena to its own site for wind, snow and solar loading rather than applying a generic design, which is the substance behind our ShedSafe accreditation.

Do stables and arenas need council approval in Tasmania?

Most equestrian buildings are well over the 36 m² threshold that some small sheds fall under, so they will generally need building and planning permits, though genuine farm buildings on farmland can fall under separate provisions. Bushfire-prone and landslip areas add further requirements. Even if you think your building might qualify for an exemption, we always recommend a conversation with your council before you build. Can I get a stable and a cover in one building?

Yes. Because we start from our shed and barn range, we can combine enclosed stable boxes with open bays or a covered work area in a single building, with dividing walls, split doors and tack rooms where you need them.

Do you install stables and arenas, or supply a kit?

We supply the kit. You can take an engineered BlueScope steel kit to erect yourself, or we can recommend installers and concreters across Tasmania to build it for you. We can also recommend suppliers for the internal fit-out.

Will my arena stand up to an exposed rural site?

Yes, provided it is engineered for the site, which every Tassie Sheds building is, for wind and, where relevant, snow loading. For coastal properties we can also recommend COLORBOND® Ultra steel for extra corrosion resistance.
