What does a carport cost, and how do you get a price?

Carports are the most affordable way to get a vehicle under cover, but there is still no single price, because a single skillion carport and a double gable carport with taller posts can vary the price greatly. How to choose the right carport size

A carport is set by three numbers: span (the width you are covering), length (how far it runs), and height (clearance to the beam). Because we design to the millimetre, the carport fits your vehicles and your block rather than the other way around. A few pointers:

• Single carport: around 3 to 3.6 m of span comfortably covers one car or ute. Allow at least 5.5 to 6 m of length for a full-size vehicle.
• Double carport: around 6 m of span for two cars side by side, or one car plus a trailer, boat or bikes.
• Height: 2.4 to 2.7 m suits most cars, but step up to 3 m or more for a 4WD with roof racks, a caravan, a camper trailer or a boat on a high trailer.

Roof profiles, posts and patio options

You can choose a gable roof (a pitched, symmetrical look that suits a freestanding cover or a design that ties in with a pitched house roof), a flat or low-slope roof, or a skillion roof that slopes one way, handy for draining water away from the house or fitting under an existing eaveline. Carports are built on square hollow section (SHS) steel posts and finished with COLORBOND® steel roof sheeting, in a deep pan 5 rib or traditional corrugated profile. Gable carports can have a roof pitch of between 5 and 20 degrees, and you can choose from 2, 5, 7.5 and 10 degree pitches on a skillion carport.

If you are covering an outdoor entertaining area rather than a car, our carports are also cost effective as a roofed cover. We use the same Australian BlueScope steel, and kits come with pre-cut and pre-punched beams and columns for straightforward assembly. We use SHS posts that can be installed directly into concrete piers or bolted down to piers or a slab. Kits include a detailed construction manual, which makes installing a carport a realistic weekend project with a couple of helpers, or we can recommend installers who can handle the assembly for you.

Built for Tasmanian weather

A carport is an open structure, which makes wind the main thing the engineering has to handle. Most of Tasmania sits in wind Region A (non-cyclonic), but an exposed or elevated site, or a coastal block near the surf, can attract far higher design wind speeds, and an under-engineered open cover is exactly the kind of structure that lifts in a storm. We engineer every carport to its own site for wind loading (and snow loading in elevated areas such as the Central Highlands), which is the point of our ShedSafe accreditation. For blocks close to the coast, salt exposure is a real factor, and we can advise on the use of COLORBOND® Ultra.

Do you need council approval for a carport in Tasmania?

Some smaller carports fall under the permit-free thresholds and larger ones do not, so it is worth checking before you build. Under the Tasmanian CBOS rules, an owner can generally build a small Class 10a structure without a building permit up to 18 m² if it is not a prefabricated kit, or up to 36 m² if it is a prefabricated (manufactured) building. Our carports are prefabricated kits, so the 36 m² threshold is the one that usually applies, and a single carport and a standard 6m x 6m double both sit within it. For a prefabricated carport over 18 m² you simply notify the council on completion of the build. Carports are often built next to fences or homes and this can affect whether the carport is exempt.
